The first EP, Repetition with Variation, was recorded in a basement studio, Hoolamusic, in Leeds in the Autumn of 2008 by Mike Thrussel. Four songs. Monmon were a four-piece at the time with a keen interest in arguing the toss over distortion, drones and loops, dance rhythms, retro-psychedelia and garage punk bands of the sixties and seventies. Subject material includes the Council Estate Fear and Loathing of No.1 King of the Slums, the self-medicated detachment of Saturday Night and the anti-war anthem Michael. Repetition was released by the band as a DiY CD and No.1 was, and still is, regularly played on the radio, especially by that nice man Tom Robinson on BBC6music.
Which is nice.

Monkey Fist was recorded in late 2009, in another small studio, The Soundmill, by Ed, over another rainy weekend. Monmon had, relatively bloodlessly, stripped down to a trio and replaced rhythm guitar with a large slab of still silent space. The looping is still evident but now restricted to the sole electric guitar, which has more room to spin in over the hard and tight bass and drums. Subject matter includes knots, The muse of poetry and prescription-based substance abuse.
This EP was again manufactured and released by monmon as a DiY CD.
